Plockton

Sunday, April 6th, 2008

One of Scotland’s most popular west coast destinations has to be Plockton.  Enjoying a sheltered and sunny location on Loch Carron, Plockton even has palm trees along the shore and it’s easy to see why the crowds flock here in summer.  My favourite time though is in the autumn when the village is a bit more peaceful!  My “Sale of the week” this week is a picture taken from a well known vantage point above the village, which has views that reach as far as Torridon.  Alamy licensed this image, one of a set, for a Spanish educational book.  The pictures from this shoot have done well, selling as a postcard, brochure cover and, this year, as a calendar image.

Dunblane Cathedral

Sunday, March 30th, 2008

Frommer’s are publishing a new guide book covering “Edinburgh and the Best of Scotland” and this week selected 11 of my images.  Most of my pictures will feature in areas outwith Edinburgh such as this one of Dunblane Cathedral

Norway

Saturday, March 22nd, 2008

Its been a quiet week this week for Scottish sales but Alamy has licenced a couple of images taken on our trip to Norway last year.  We spent many days cooped up in our camper-van sheltering from the rain, but when the sun shone it was glorious.  In 1997 we had visited Briksdalsbreen in poor weather and were eager to return in better conditions.  The glacier was a disappointment, it receding many, many meters since our last visit.  But this waterfall was as superb as we had remembered it and so much better with some backlighting.  Sarah is the walker on the bridge.  The image was licenced for use in a German travel brochure.

Winter - trees and sunset

Friday, March 14th, 2008

Sunsets are probably one of the most popular photographic subjects, and I guess that I have my fair share too.  A few of my sunsets have proven very popular with calendar publishers, but generally sunsets don’t sell that often.  So, this week I’m highlighting an image I took many years ago and which has just sold for the first time.  Licenced through Alamy, it is being used as a greetings card.  I spotted this stand of trees near home and knew there was potential for a good picture given some nice light.  A setting sun dropping into a bank of fog and some snow were the final ingredients.

Blackrock Cottage & Buachaille Etive Mor

Friday, February 29th, 2008

One of my favourite places in Scotland just has to be Buachaille Etive Mor on the edge of Rannoch Moor.  From just about all angles, time of day or season you can find a good shot (its a superb view from the top too!).  Blackrock Cottage is a popular foreground and this image, taken in the warm morning light of late summer, was licenced for use in an educational book in Japan.

Drystone dyker

Friday, February 22nd, 2008

The sale of the week this time around is this self portrait!  Yes, I used to be a drystone dyker (or waller for those south of the border) and earned my living for a decade practicing this fine rural craft.  Hopefully, I can still remember how to do it as I’m about to start landscaping our new garden!  The image was licenced via Alamy for a magazine sold in South Africa.  For anyone interested in learning more about drystone dyking visit the Dry Stone Walling Association of Great Britain.

Torridon

Sunday, February 17th, 2008

Scottish sales are back in the fore this week again.  Most notable were three pictures of Torridon licenced for use in a tourist brochure, all of them autumn shots.  This illustrates well the forward planning and lead-in times for many publications.  On that basis then, it will be Christmas soon!  This image, with its chocolate box colours, was one of them.

Luxembourg City

Friday, February 8th, 2008

As you would expect, its the Scottish images that form the backbone of my business but pictures from many trips over recent years provide a steady income.  This week has seen a flurry of sales from overseas destinations such as Slovenia, Northern Cyprus, Belfast, and this one from Luxembourg.  It’s an image of a beautiful stained glass window depicting the Luxembourg City skyline and it is found in the city’s Gare Centrale .

Roundabout with traffic.

Friday, February 1st, 2008

I have one picture of a roundabout and it was licenced this week!  For a good fee too, via Alamy.  I had been shooting the Edinburgh skyline at first light from Salisbury Crags a couple of years ago and was about to pack up and head for a coffee when I spotted this roundabout.  It just seemed a clean graphical image.  Its no snap though - the camera was tripod mounted and I waited 20 minutes or so for two cars to appear in position.

Hogmanay in Scotland

Friday, December 21st, 2007

It’s too late to catch the last post for Christmas but I’m getting in the spirit of things now!  Many towns and cities in Scotland make a big effort to celebrate Hogmanay.  Edinburgh’s Hogmanay party is world famous and has some great photo opotunities, but seeing in the New Year on Stirling Castle Esplanade is pretty special too.  For something different, visit Stonehaven in Aberdeenshire to see the Fireball ceremony.
