It’s a numbers game

Wednesday, May 7th, 2008

Stock photography is a numbers game.  And in the digital age those numbers are growing at an alarming rate, a rate that is far too fast for any one photographer to keep up with.  It seems to me that most stock photographers are going to have to accept diminishing returns as the number of photographers submitting images to agencies and the number of images increace.  Add to that the falling value of stock imagery and the future look a little bleak.

Ah well, the best I can do is try and keep up.  In the week that Alamy surpassed 12 million images I breached the 5000 mark, which is roughly 0.042% of Alamy’s total image count! A “small fish in a big pond” comes to mind.

Stock images of Norway

Thursday, May 1st, 2008

Today, I’ve added 597 images of Norway, mostly taken during our 2007 trip.  Regions represented are Hordaland, More og Romsdal, Oppland, Rogaland and Sogn og Fjordane.  Personal highlights are Eidfjord and Voringsfossen, plus the apple blossom in Hardanger, Hordaland; Alesund, the Atlantic Road, Geiranger, Mardalsfossen in Eikesdalen and the fishing island of Ona in More og Romsdal; Stavanger and Preikestolen in Rogaland; the Flam railway, Naeroyfjorden; Balestrand, Fjaerland and Oldevatnet in Sogn og Fjordane.

Norway is a beautiful and varied country.  Next year we plan to explore above the Arctic Circle.

Stock images of Slovenia

Friday, April 11th, 2008

Added today are over 200 stock images of Slovenia.  Locations represented include the Julian Alps, the Triglav National park, Bohinj and Bled in Gorenjska; the Soca Valley and Piran; plus Notranjska, Stajerska and the capital city of Slovenia, Ljubljana.  Each image will soon* be linked to their respective Alamy sales page and, of course, Rights-Managed licences and prints are available from the Scot-image website.

*UPDATE* Each is image is now linked to their respective Alamy sales page.

Adding these images to Scot-image will also give me an opportunity to judge my attempts at SEO.

Buy our guide book, Landscapes of Slovenia, published by Sunflower Books.  It features 41 walks and six car tours and covers large areas of the country, not just the Julian Alps.

Scot-image update

Friday, March 14th, 2008

PhotoShelter have added a few neat features, some of which I have incorporated into Scot-image.  Most noticeable will be the larger thumbnail images, increased from 100 to 160 pixels.  A less obvious but useful new feature is the gallery flash slide-show.  Here’s an example slide-show from my Vatersay gallery. Finally, PhotoShelter have tweaked the gubbins (IT tech term) and speeded up display times.

Website updated

Friday, February 1st, 2008

A new version of scot-image has just been released!  Rather than migrate the site into WordPress I decided it would be easier to rewrite the old site using the wordpress theme.  A days worth of trial and error coding later and it was finished.  I hope you like it!

I’ve still to add a few more images to the home page and for some reason the pixellated effect slide show doesn’t work in Firefox.  Another day!

If you spot any mistakes, broken links, etc., please let me know.  Thanks.
